                            Language Arts Period 1 & 2       

                                                             "Why is a Raven like a Writing Desk?" ~ The Hatter



This course is designed to further improve the students’ mastery of the English language. Drills of language skills are reviewed and reinforced. Particular attention is focused on the functions of words in various types of sentences, the use of dialogue, and the nuances of argument and counter-argument. This will aid the students to develop more interesting sentences in their narrative, argumentative, and informative/explanatory compositions. Students are placed according to ability (see appendix).

                            Literature Period 7  & 8                

                          "What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?" ~ Alice



This course stresses reading strategies, such as building on prior knowledge, predicting outcomes, organizing information, drawing conclusions, making inferences, and summarizing. Students practice these higher-level techniques by reading and discussing a variety of non-fiction, poetry, short stories and novels. Additionally, students will indentify significant literary techniques, such as plot design, conflict, characterization, setting and theme. Students are placed according to ability (see appendix).
