Eighth Grade Social Studies

Course Syllabus

Eighth-grade social studies is divided into two distinct units. The first three quarters are a survey of American history from slavery and the Civil War period to the Cold War. A special emphasis is placed upon general concepts, such as why events happened and what the outcomes were to these events. The fourth unit occurs in May; it is devoted to American government. This unit will culminate in the students taking many competency examinations covering the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Illinois constitution, and the proper use and display of the American flag.

Grades will be determined by points per assessment. Assessments will include the following assessments: reading quizzes, Google Classroom assignments, writing assignments, in-class work, and exams. We adhere to the LJHS grading policy and BEARS policy. If work is not meeting the expectations, students will need to rework until the expectation is met.

The required materials for social studies include: writing utensil, covered textbook, notebook and folder.

Google Classroom is our Learning Management System. Students will sign up in class. This is where much of our online work is completed.
