Transitional Reading Program:

  • Students are seen in a small group or  individually,  twice a week for half an hour each session.

A Typical Transition Reading Lesson:

  • A student rereads the story that was practiced at home from their bagof books
  • A new story is introduced and previewed by performing a picture walk, make predictions, finds unusual words, talk about new vocabulary, find unusual elements in the story, etc.
  • A student will read the new story for fluency and word knowledge
  • A student will then retell the new story utlizing comprehension strategies
  • Studentswrite using the new story as the foundation
  • Students then utlize word work activities such as;
    • practicing letter formation
    • magnetic letters to make works and word patterns
    • wipe boards to make and break words apart
    • word families
    • unusual words patterns
    • proper punctuation and grammar

Additional Activities:

  • Partipcation in the READ therapy dogs program, students read monthly to specially trained therapy dogs. This activity enhances fluency, comprehension, motivation, and confidence in reading.
  • Use of SmartBoard for reading activities
  • Tumble books website for comprehension and extension activities
